AFRICAN HAIR SUMMIT 2016

Monday, June 20, 2016

I attended the African Hair Summit that was brought together by Adanna Enweozor two days ago. Was it lit??? Oh yes! it was on fire. I saw so many naturalista’s with different hair types that I literally drooled at their curl patterns, the locs on the guys made me start considering Locs. Music from the talented Jessica Bongo’s filled our ears, it was an interesting event.

In attendance was Kate Henshaw who is their ambassador, Chinwe Juliet of Igbocurls, Dr Oluwakemi Osunderu who spoke at length about the various diseases we could get from hair relaxers, there are some shocking ones I tell you and I will let you guys in on everything  that happened. Lots of people were present, Lumo naturals who was giving free hairdo, House of Merola, Natmane, MinaStones, i can go on and on but lets get down to business.

Dr Oluwakemi Osunderu talked on Issues that affect our hair and skin, they include Emotional stress, Diet, Genetics, Hormonal issues, Pharmaceuticals. She also talked about Chemicals that are found in hair products called Estrogen and Endocrine disrupting Chemicals EDC which affect our hormones. EDC’s are found in almost all natural hair products eg detanglers, shampoos and conditioners, gel, body cream, hair oils,  It increases the rate of fibroid in African women through scalp lesions and burns from products. Adanna Enwezor stated she was told by the doctor to avoid relaxers during her second pregnancy meaning that these products can also affect us during childbirth.

The effects of these EDC’s in hair creams include
Breast Cancer,
Heart diseases
Cognitive disorders
Premature puberty
Altered immune function

Dr Osunderu said something I liked, she said and I quote “God gave us thick hair and skin because of our harsh weather” and when we put relaxers on our hair we are exposing our scalp, same thing happens when we use bleaching creams. Embrace your kinky hair, those people we try to imitate by relaxing our hair now wear braids and buy kinky extensions.

There were lots of questions being asked by the audience but I can’t put them all here so I will just put the one I asked Chinwe of Igbocurls. I asked what her regimen is, I just had to, I mean if you follow her on instagram you will see her hair is long and gorgeous...

Chinwe’s Regimen:
·         Pre-poo with Olive Oil ( pre-poo is what you do before shampoo)
·         Detangle
·         Shampoo ( know the difference between Clarifying and Moisturizing shampoo)
·         Deep Condition(DC)
·         Apple Cider Vinegar rinse (ACV) it balances the pH level of the hair
·         Dry with an old t-shirt
·         Apply a Leave-in Conditioner (According to Chinwe, If your leave-in conditioner doesn’t detangle, leave your hair soft and moisturized then toss that leave-in conditioner
·         Finally Seal with an Oil or a Butter
Always remember that moisture is key in this natural hair journey.
