What do you have in your spray bottle?
If you’re natural and you don’t own a spray bottle… sister
how do you moisturize your hair? Spray bottle is the life of natural hair…
literally. It is the best thing for moisturizing natural hair. For those that don’t
know what it is, A Spray bottle is a bottle that contains water as its first
ingredient used for moisturizing natural hair.
If you do own one of these, what is inside your spray
bottle?
- water only
- water and oils
- water, conditioner and oils
For those that mix water and other things, how long does it
normally take you to use up that mixture?
- 1 week?
- 2 weeks?
- 3 weeks?
- A month?
Any homemade DIY that
contains water can spoil, mold or grow bacteria.
The store bought products don’t count because they contain
preservatives which helps keep them for as long as the expiry date says. Unless you have preservatives in your kitchen
for that DIY, then this post isn’t for you.
How to AVOID GETTING BACTERIA IN YOUR SPRAY BOTTLE
- Make small batches at a time: Making small batches will help you use up the product while it’s still fresh. Make one that can last you for 4 to 5 days and if it’s still remaining after a week, throw it out. I know you’re thinking about how much the oils and conditioner inside cost but sister… pour it away.
- Add essential oils: there are some essential oils with anti-bacterial properties that can help keep bacteria at bay e.g. tea tree oil, Rosemary oil, lavender oil, just to name a few. Remember, just because you added a few drops of this oil doesn't mean you should use that mixture for eternity.
- Use Distilled water or boiled water: because water from the tap can sometimes contain bacteria, distilled water is your best bet. If you do use tap water, make sure you boil and cool before use.
- Chill it: This applies to any DIY you make. Sometimes putting the mixture in the fridge helps because cold temperatures keep the mold and bacteria from growing as quickly. This doesn’t mean it won’t grow; it just won’t grow as quickly as it would if left at room temperature.
